Hot news 4 the 25th edition of Toronto Jazz Festival (June 24 – July 3, 2011)

Just got the first crop of exciting news from the Toronto Jazz Festival – June 24 to July 3 2011, 25th edition.

Oh, man, the best 2 bassists alive that I know will be in town: Stanley Clarke and Victor Wooten!

Not to mention watching Lenny White behind the drumkit.

Or the greatest jazz violonist of them all, Jean Luc Ponty (although the Didier Lockwood’s concert in 1989’s communist Romania is somewhat of a legend).

And Paco de Lucia, bringing a legendary dancer with him for the show.

We’re on the move!
Look out Entertainment District, we’re coming home!

We started off with just three venues 24 years ago so we thought it would be appropriate to celebrate our 25th anniversary in the Entertainment District where it all began. Metro Square will be the new headquarters for the Mainstage Marquee and we’re excited to set up shop in our new digs this summer!
The big news doesn’t stop there, however! We’re announcing not one, not two but THREE acts this summer.

Just announced…RTF IV!!!

We can hardly wait either! It’s been almost 40 years since this seminal group first appeared on the scene. On Tuesday, June 28 at the Sony Centre, Return to Forever IV will kick off another legendary tour as Chick Corea, Stanley Clark, Lenny White, Frank Gambale and special guest Jean-Luc Ponty join forces.

This is going to be a groundbreaking show as they play songs from the classic RTF work Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy. Expect a few modern twists thrown in as their creative jazz & rock fusion sound is sure to bring down the house!

Bring on the blu-pop!
Bela Fleck & The Original Flecktones are coming back to Toronto to give us a much needed dose of that bluegrass jazz fusion! Lighting up the Mainstage Marquee at Metro Square, frontman Bela Fleck, Victor Wooten, Futureman and Howard Levy plan to do what they do best, mix some acoustic and electric banjo with both a folk and modern twist.

Also, keep an eye out for their new album coming out this May. It’s their first one together since 1991. Click on the album covers below to hear the Original Flecktones in action.

Paco de Lucia
Perhaps the best known name in flamenco, Paco de Lucia is the undisputed master of the form. Passionate and gritty one minute, delicate and heartbreaking the next, he will set the Sony Centre alight when he takes the stage on Monday, June 27.

Never one to rest on his laurels as a traditional player, de Lucia has continually broadened his horizons collaborating with musicians such as John McLaughlin, Chick Corea and Al Di Meola, much to the chagrin of his purist fans. Whatever you’re feeling, there’s no denying he’s simply “the greatest in the world, period” according to Pat Metheny.
