Toronto Jazz Festival 2013, June 20 – 29: big guns announced

The TD Toronto Jazz Festival, the main in this city, takes place June 20-29 this year.

The full lineup will not be available until April, but we get warm in the middle of the winter just by reading some of the big names booked for 2013. The announcement was made yesterday, 12 February 2013.

Impressive, isn’t it?

  • Trombone Shorty is back to Toronto. His concerts are always sold out and for good reason: it gets hot hot hot! (and we love that, being a cold weather nation)
  • The age opposites are Willie Nelson (80) and Nikky Yanofsky (19)
  • John McLaughlin – whose 2012 album “Now Here This” is the best in years – still tours vigorously at age 71. You can listen for free the full album on Rdio (they give a 6-month free subscription now) here.
  • Did you know that Steve Martin, of Hollywood fame, is an accomplished (he won a Grammy for his album The Crow in 2010) banjoist? Neither did I. His 2011 album – with his partners onstage this year in Toronto, The Steep Canyon Rangers – consists of original material only. We all love him dearly, but hopefully he will not get it wrong as the other Hollywood-ian did it in Toronto.

Let’s all do our Caribbean escapes, and when back fill in our smartphones with music from these greats, in anticipation for the June parties!
