Romania, 1980s…

The Romanian Post telegraph service was charging the sender by the number of words. Brevity was the rule, but for birthdays (as in the example below), people would splash and send elaborate, elegant sentences.

It was a strong emotion receiving the little square misives, as they were the bearer of urgent messages, either good or bad. To read them, you’d have to unfold the paper, and that always got the heart pounding…
