Boston and Joan Jett fire up the engines in Toronto for the Hyper Space Tour

22 summers ago I launched a radio station and the first song was More Than a Feeling. I finally got to catch it live.

On a sticky July night by the Lake Ontario, the Hyper Space Tour’s sole Canadian stop (tour started last April 30 and ends July 30, 2017 in Bristow, VA) showed no intention to cool off the engines. On the contrary, they turned them to hyper mode.

I am old enough to have put another  dime in the jukebox, and so were most of the few thousands filling the re-branded amphiteatre (Budweiser Stage, formerly Molson Amphitheatre), one of the most spectacular places in this world to watch a concert.

The love flowing to and from the stage during 55-year old Joan Jett’s act (with her Blackhearts) was fantastic.

By the time Boston hit the stage it was dark, the engines temperature and the spirits were elevated to a plateau where happiness abounds. I was very happy to finally see live the band that four close friends (Vidu, Vicky, Ovi and Dan) and I chose to launch Radio Galaxia in my hometown Baia Mare, Romania, the evening of Friday 18 August 1995.

By having More Than A Feeling as our first song on the radio in 1995, we were signaling our intention to play intelligent melodic rock. The private radio market in Romania was 5 years old in Romania at the time. The Westerly-funded, formatted hit stations (such as the Belgian network Radio Contact) were all the hype. By playing Boston on the radio (and Styx, Supertramp, Toto, Kansas, Tears For Fears, Mike Oldfield, Joan Jett and so on) we also meant “we play what we want”, and it’s OK for us to take a leak against the wind. It worked well, but at the time I had absolutely no hope to catch any of these guys live during my lifetime.

But it happened 22 years later, just days after seeing Moody Blues for a first time.

And Iron Maiden (another first!) is next in two days.

Thank you, Boston, thank you Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.
